Palmetto Cove – September 11-14, 2025

Joint Campout with Palmetto Winnebago Club

In addition to us (Rene & Renee (Sam) Bollengier), attendance included:  Joe & Doris Horton, Jim & Pat Housley, Joe & Geri Galloway, Bill & Cheryl Moorehead, Don & Betty Elliott, Gary & Barbara Lyons, Mike & Betsy Beaulieu, Barbara & Greg Nicholas, John & Linda Marano, Jerry & Hilda Rivenbark, Allen & Brenda Carter, Phil & Libby Dorries, and our newest members Tom & Kathy Caig, Ron & Lisa Allen, Jeff & Cindy Distefano.  34 total for dinner on Saturday night, a great turn out!

Rene and I arrived on Tuesday in preparation of co-hosting with Barb & Greg.  Due to a previous incident, their camper was not ready and so they rented a cabin nearby on Wednesday and commuted each day. The four of us had met previously a couple of times ironing out our plans for the weekend, so once we got to Palmetto Cove, it was simply a matter of putting all our pieces together.

Thursday :  Everybody arrived and got settled.  Dinner was on our own.  Around 7:30 or so, everyone gathered at the Bollengier’s site for a “meet and greet” and a snack to share.  Sam brought out the jar where everyone was to guess how many items were in the jar.  Winner to be announced after dinner Saturday.

Friday:  After lunch a group of us gathered at the grassy area by the Bollengier’s camper and played rope toss and Murbles.  Some of these people have been practicing!  The competition was rough!  John Marano’s form as he throws his ropes and Murbles is something to behold.  It must be seen in slow motion to fully appreciate how gravity works against the human form. Board games and puzzles were also set up and available to play in the activity room for those who didn’t want to be outside in the sun.

At 6:00 we all enjoyed a pot luck dinner.  There was so much food that I became full just by seeing it all spread out on the tables!  After dinner we all relaxed in a comfy rocking chair by the fireplace.  Someone had tossed in the special salts and the colors were simply amazing.  I think everyone was silently nodding off in their chairs it was that relaxing.

Saturday:  A few people headed out to the wineries and tea plantation while others left in the opposite direction in search of fresh apples.  It was nice having some time to just relax and enjoy the view of the mountains with the sun and clouds dancing around them.  Today is race day, and we need to be ready.  Barbara found a black and white checkered table cloth 9’ x 14’ in size.  Each square measured 3 inches, big enough to fit a hot wheels car.  There were enough spaces that 12 drivers could race at the same time.  There were colored dots on many of the squares that represented a casualty of some sort.  If your car landed on one of the dots you selected a card from the casualty box and performed what it stated.  Casualties could be anything from a flat tire, to hitting the wall or getting in an accident.  After 10 races were run, a running order was determined. Betsy won 1, Betty won 2, Barbara Lyons won 2, Jeff won 1, John won 1 and Cindy won 3 races.

Before dinner we all gathered at the rocking chairs for a new group picture 2025!  It didn’t take very long for all of us to get seated and smiling before John (campground host) snapped pictures of the group on nearly 5 phones.  In my first picture everyone in the front row has their eyes closed, the 2nd picture is a good one for framing.  From there we gathered to dinner.  The smell of sizzling mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce and garlic was heavy on the air.  We club hosts agreed on an Italian theme for this dinner and prepared lasagna and garden salad for dinner, rounded out with Geri’s cupcakes to celebrate Ruth’s 100thbirthday for desert.  Attendees placed their final guesses for How Many in the Jar? And 50/50 tickets were sold.

The winners this weekend were:

50/50 raffle – Tom & Kathy Caig split the $55 pot!

Top Murble’er – John Marano with 7 games!

Top Hot Wheels Racer – Cindy Distefano with 3 races!

How Many in the Jar? – Geri Galloway, guessed 42, correct answer was 48

It was a great weekend with fabulous people, fantastic weather in a very special location.  If you have never been to Palmetto Cove or Cleveland, SC, before, you really owe it to yourself to at least make that attempt.  It is truly beautiful there.

Next outing is scheduled for October 2-5, 2025 at the Crossroads Coach Resort in Lake City, SC.  Give Steve a call at 843-374-2131 if you still need a site.  We have never been to this campground and we are looking forward to it.

Safe travels everyone and we will see you soon!
